New "Pro-Life" flyer from "Catholics United"

Postby tcarlyle on Mon Oct 06, 2008 4:25 am

I just got this from a group called "Catholics United," and found it to be surprisingly liberal for a Catholic group. The flyer is worth a look, especially considering that many of the same people who are against abortion are also pro-torture and pro-death-penalty. Makes you think! -- Troy

The flyer is now available in the tridd Library:

October 5, is Pro-Life Sunday, and with the November elections just around the corner, some groups on the far right are bombarding Catholics and other people of faith with the message that all that matters in this election is a candidate's stated position on the legality of abortion. To help inform Catholics about the fullness of our Church's teachings on life, Catholics United has published a new flyer entitled "Pro-Life Means Action on Behalf of All Human Life."

We've seen this before. Although some of the groups that push this message are operating under a heartfelt desire to help the unborn, all-too-often this single-issue approach to values voting is designed to strong-arm people of faith into voting for candidates who do not share our values. By publishing this flyer, we are saying that it's not pro-life to believe in unjust and preemptive war. It's not pro-life to believe healthcare is a privilege only for the most fortunate. It's not pro-life to support torture and promote economic policies that place the wants of the few ahead of the needs of the many.

We produced this flyer at your request, and with the help of a Catholics United volunteer from Los Angeles. It helps paint a vision of a true pro-life agenda, and provides valuable talking points for activists who want to counter the far right's attempts to water down the social teachings of our church.

Here's what you can do to help get the message out that Pro-Life means ALL life:

• Step 1: Download, print, and make copies of this flyer.

• Step 2: Distribute them to your friends and neighbors, and make them available at community, political, and church events (NOTE: please check with your pastor before distributing any voter education materials on church property).

• Step 3: Drop us a line. We always love to hear about the work you're doing in the places that matter. Please email James Salt at jsalt@catholics-united.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false and tell us how many flyers you've distributed, and where. Also tell us about any efforts to water down our faith you're aware of in your community.

Right-wing groups will stop at nothing this year to elect candidates who are hostile to the common good. Help us get the truth out to those who need to hear it most by downloading the PDF flyer "Pro-Life Means Action on Behalf of All Human Life."

Sincerely,
James and Chris

Here's a new voting guide from the folks at Catholics United:

New Catholics United Values Voter Guide Compares McCain and Obama on Key Catholic Issues

We don't have to tell you how important this year's presidential election is. You already know what hangs in the balance: health care for all, or health care for those who can afford it. An economic bailout that helps Main Street, or one that only helps Wall Street. Real solutions to abortion that can bring all Americans to the table to find common ground, or more of the same old politics of division.

You know what's at stake. But many of our Catholic brothers and sisters are under seige by right wing groups who distort the meaning of the common good and use the language of faith for political gain. Right now, these well-funded organizations are papering church parking lots, putting unapproved voter guides in the pews, and taking every opportunity to badger Catholics into believing that it is immoral to vote for certain candidates. They must be stopped.

Help inform Catholics on the important issues in this election by downloading and distributing Catholics United's new values voter guide
http://www.catholics-united.org/files/v ... -guide.pdf

This week, Catholics United mailed 50,000 Catholic households in Pennsylvania and Ohio a message encouraging voters to consider the fullness of church teaching on human life at the voting booth. Today we are releasing a candidate comparison guide that outlines the positions of both Sen. McCain and Sen. Obama on some of the most important moral issues facing our nation: life, torture, the economy, the Iraq War, health care and climate change. We need your help getting these resources into the hands of those who need them most.

Here's what you can do:

• Print copies of our values voter guide and "Pro-Life Means All Life" flyer and pass them out at community and political events in your area. Please consult with your pastor before distributing these materials on church property.

• Let us know what you're up to by sending an email to info@catholics-united.org. Just today Catholics United member Noreen S. of Wisconsin wrote to say that she's mailing our flyers to 900 people in her parish. This kind of activity is vital to getting our message across.

• If you haven't already done so, please make a donation. It costs us about $20,000 to mail to 50,000 households, and we literally can't do this without your support.

For too long, the far right has manipulated the Catholic faith to suit its partisan agenda. Let's make 2008 the year we put an end to all that. Please join our efforts to get the word out.

Sincerely,
James and Chris
