Each time a man stands for an idea, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends a tiny ripple of hope. Those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

EAST TEXAS PFLAG MINUTES
Monday, September 8, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by our president, Rhonda. We met at the Tyler Unity Center with sixteen in attendance.

Welcome:

Rhonda welcomed all present, read the PFLAG Vision, and asked everyone to introduce themselves.

Minutes:

Brenda read the minutes from our last meeting, Brad moved they be accepted, Jeffrey seconded and all were in agreement. Brenda also gave our current balance of $1,053.73.

Old Business:

Brad gave an update on the PFLAG float for the Dallas parade. He announced that the sides were finished, but more work is needed. He asked us to help out this Friday at 6 p.m. and also encouraged us to go to Dallas on Saturday, September 20, to help finalize the decorations. The parade will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 21.

New Business:

Rhonda called upon Lou Anne to share how our group is contacted both by phone and by letter by people all over East Texas. A letter recently arrived from Texarkana and Lou Anne explained how our Tyler group is the only PFLAG group available to a huge area of Texas. No other group is east of Dallas except our Tyler group.

We occasionally receive correspondence from incarcerated individuals and sometimes from family members seeking help for incarcerated children. We are called upon for help and for support.

Rhonda announced plans for the upcoming PFLAG meetings. The October meeting will center around National Coming Out Day. The November meeting will present the DVD presentation called "Unlearning Homophobia" and the December meeting will be a potluck Christmas party and election of officers.

Program:

We were delighted to have Peter G. Milne, Attorney at Law, speak to us tonight. His background is interesting in that he first received an engineering degree at Golden Gate, then at age 40 decided to get his law degree. His masters is in taxes and estate planning.

His presentation dealt at least in part with legal papers needed by gay partners as well as correct wording on property deeds when the property is jointly owned by gay partners. The deed should read "right of survivorship." He pointed out how hostile Texas is regarding placing a partner on your health insurance policy.

He shared much helpful information and allowed plenty of time for any type of legal question.

Adjournment:

We adjourned about 8:30 p.m.
