Oklahoma Politico Preparing Anti-Gay Comic Book for Voters

Oklahoma County Commissioner Brent Rinehart is reportedly preparing to mail out a homophobic comic book to voters featuring stories about how gays and Satan are out to get him, the Oklahoman reports:

"The 16-page comic book makes fun of homosexuals and criticizes Rinehart's political opponents. It features a man and woman admiring Rinehart's often-controversial political career."

Said Keith Gaddie, a political science professor at the University of Oklahoma: "This is one of the strangest things I've ever seen. I've never seen a comic book with the phrase ‘anal sodomy' in it before. That was a new one for me.”

An angel and Satan, as well as "toga-wearing gays, political figures, and trench coat-clad henchmen" figure among the comic book's characters in the odd re-election campaign propaganda:

"In one sequence, Satan says: 'If I can get the kids to believe homosexuality is normal!' The angel replies: 'Hey Satan, not with Brent around you won't!' Rinehart said he doesn't think the depiction is inappropriate and that he is proud of the comic. 'The history of my office is that I do expose the homosexual agenda, and that it does exist in the state of Oklahoma, and my history also would show that I am very much opposed to the homosexual agenda,' Rinehart said. Rinehart said he spent two months writing the comic. He said his friend Shane Suiters did the illustrations. Rinehart wouldn't say who is managing his campaign, and wouldn't say if he's running it himself."

Maybe Sally Kern is running it!

OK County Commissioner Brent Rinehart's Homophobic Comic Book

Earlier today I posted about Oklahoma County Commissioner Brent Rinehart's homophobic 16-page reelection campaign comic book that he's sending out to voters. The comic book features all the horrible things that gays might do and highlights Rinehart's efforts against them.

The pages also target Attorney General Drew Edmondson and his attempts to force the Boy Scouts of America to drop its anti-gay policies adjacent to a drawing of (I suspect) a gay in a toga trying to lure a young boy crying "help" out of the woods.

According to the Oklahoman: "Edmondson filed felony campaign finance charges against Rinehart last year, alleging Rinehart and his former campaign manager illegally funded the 2004 campaign for county commissioner. A trial has been scheduled for September."

I've posted two pages from the masterpiece above (via Reason Magazine), and here's a PDF of the entire book (thanks to commenter znsd). Who knew we would get to take a look at it so soon?

See the PDF of the whole Comic here:

My, my... that certainly is some mighty fine artwork for a state-sponsored comic. I've been following this in the news and still am not sure whether to laugh or be angry, so I'm feeling the emotions from both.

Personally, I'm a bit hurt as well. With all those stereotypically "gay" characters down there at the bottom, I'm surprised to see that there is no obvious Leatherman. Apparently, though, a Native American, gym rat, club kid, Peter Pan, a Roman in a toga? and Satan himself do make the list. What has the World come to now that anti-gay propaganda no longer finds Leatherfolk worthy of inclusion? I've had it! :)

In my angst, I feel compelled to add a solemn looking, yet observant leatherboy to the foreground. No speech bubble. No sign -- his characteristic contemplative look says enough -- never mind that he's so bored with it all that he's diggin' in his pants! Silly leatherboy!

Take a closer look at the original comic from Troy's link. i noticed these misspellings: "He asks to many hard questions", "pedifile" and "pedaphile". There may be more, but i couldn't see through the RED after those three. Rinehart said he spent two months writing the comic. He said his friend Shane Suiters did the illustrations. Maybe my leatherboy can't decide whether to scratch his head or his nuts... not-so-silly leatherboy!

Okay, I think this is about as much toll as my 2 cents covers.

You know, Ox... you really should write more - I hope you keep a journal or something at least. You really do have a wonderful wit and a way with words!

Not to mention a great deal of heart and a fine artistic sense!

I'm not sure what's going on in Oklahoma, but I'm starting to think maybe things aren't so bad in Tyler after all!

Troy, thank you for the kind words. While I do at times let my convictions get the best of me, I am at least a passionate person. 8) I posted this on Myspace as well.

You're right about Oklahoma. They have some pretty jacked up laws and such. From talking to Okie friends around the time that Texas repealed the dildo law, I was told there is supposedly a law against letting your livestock fornicate out where people can see it from the road -- like that kind of fine is very practical in an agricultural state like Oklahoma!

I haven't confirmed all of these, but these are alleged Oklahoma laws:

State law prohibits anyone taking a bite out of another's hamburger.
Whaling is illegal.
Females are forbidden from doing their own hair without being licensed by the state.
Dogs must have a permit signed by the mayor in order to congregate in groups of three or more on private property.
Violators can be fined, arrested and/or jailed for making ugly faces at dogs.
It is unlawful to eat fried chicken while walking down the sidewalk in Oklahoma.
It's against the law to get a fish drunk in Oklahoma.
It’s statutory rape for a man over 18 to have sex with a female under the age of 18, provided she’s a virgin.
Clinton, OK has a law against masturbating while watching two people having sex in a car.
Tattoos have been banned. (Repealed, Effective 11/1/2006. Tattoos are now legal in Oklahoma!)

Texas has its own problems for sure, but it does seem that homosexuals and other sexual "deviants" such as those in the Leather/BDSM/Fetish realm (even if heterosexual) are more oppressed in Oklahoma than here in Texas. Like here, those who are out in these lifestyles tend to congregate, but seem to attack each other more as a result of the oppression, at least more than in more liberal areas of the country.

Troy, you and I have briefly discussed this overall issue of oppression in the past. It seems to me that times, they-are-a-changing and people are becoming more comfortable with themselves and issues that have been widely considered taboo in the past, yet these laws are staying in place for the most part. Progress has been made as of late, but we still need to keep pushing for what is right instead of just hoping that politics and law stop using religion to clothe the wolves that they really are.

Ox

P.S. -- I hope you don't get notifications when we go back and edit our own posts, cuz I sure do it A LOT!

Beautifully put, Ox! - I don't think I'd change a single word.

One of the ways we're hoping to make a difference in the lives of folks around here is by forming our community center. Project TAG is under way now. We have a board of directors, and are moving forward. I invite everone who's interested to join us!
