EAST TEXAS PFLAG MINUTES
Monday, October 12, 2009

Gerry called the meeting to order and read the Mission Statement of PFLAG.

Old Business:

Gerry reported that work on a website for East Texas PFLAG continues. Rhonda is currently working with a representative from the National PFLAG group to develop one through their website at no cost to us .

At the September meeting, Lou Anne moved that East Texas PFLAG donate $200 to Project TAG to help offset their expenses for the upcoming Valentine Ball. An on-line vote was taken with the majority approving this motion.

New Business:

Gerry read a letter received by Lou Anne stating that the Wichita Falls Chapter has been disbanded and they donated $200 to our chapter.

Gerry reminded everyone that dues need to be paid if not current. Troy explained how National uses the dues we send to them.

The next Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup is scheduled for November 21st. A tentative start time was suggested for 7:30 am. No decision was made and was tabled for the November meeting.

Gerry shared a letter from the President of the James Bowie High School Straight/Gay Alliance. The letter stated they have had up to 70 members in attendance at their bi-monthly meeting. It further described a study that surveyed Junior High and High School students who reported some type of abuse (verbally or physically). The organization was asking for a $50 donation to have East Texas PFLAG as a sponsor and featured on their T-shirts. Donations will benefits their efforts to promote tolerance and education. Troy recommended that we make such a donation. Dwight recommended that we investigate the validity of this group before donating.

Troy reported on the spaghetti fundraising dinner by Project TAG prior to the November 9th East Texas PFLAG meeting. Toby Johnson, an award winning author, will be speaking at that meeting.

Several members reported on the Equality March on Washington held in October. Several members of the Texas Bobcats attended as well as Gerry’s son. There was a large contingency from Texas who also attended.

In response to a question from those in attendance, a discussion on the purpose of PFLAG and Project TAG was opened. Gerry and Troy explained the roles and reminded all that membership in both groups should not be exclusive. David reported on his recent visit to Nashville where the local PFLAG Chapter advertised their meeting times and dates resulting in an increase in attendance and membership. They meet at a local restaurant and also do community projects and outreach. He recommended that we place announcements in the local paper and TV media as well as consider moving our meeting to a local dining establishment. It was pointed out that attendance might be restricted by those who might feel uncomfortable being at such a ‘public’ gathering. Troy said he would recommend Lou Anne inquire why East Texas PFLAG is not spelled out in the local paper. (Note by Lou Anne: It IS spelled out twice a month in our Community Calendar announcements and once a year in the Clubs and Organizations supplement.)

Gerry shared her thoughts and experiences of being the parent of a gay son. She also reported on her son’s recent trip to Washington DC for the Equality March. This led to others sharing their personal experiences of verbal and/or physical abuse in school, in the general public, or when coming out.

Troy reported on his participation, along with Lou Anne and Gerry, on a panel discussion on September 25th in Lufkin at their Family Crisis Center. The topic dealt with LGBT rights, especially in the East Texas area, along with spousal abuse among gay couples.

With no further business, Troy moved/Gerry seconded to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried.
