New HIV Drug offers new options for resistant patients

Postby tcarlyle on Tue Aug 07, 2007 8:25 am

Here are a couple links to articles about the new drug "Salzentry," which was just approved and could provide new options for folks who aren't doing well with current treatment options.

“The Food and Drug Administration approved Selzentry after concluding that certain hard-to-treat patients need the new option — but is requiring Pfizer to conduct further research to assess long-term side effects, said Dr. Debra Birnkrant, the agency's HIV drugs chief.”

FDA Approves Selzentry, First in Its Class

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Pfizer’s HIV entry inhibitor Selzentry (maraviroc), which is expected to be available by mid-September. The drug, which attacks CCR5 receptors on CD4 cells, is the premiere member of the first new class of oral HIV medications in over a decade.

Yeah.. and I have a few friends who were out of options, otherwise -- having developed alergies & resistance to all other treatments -- so this new drug (and other treatments still lin development) really are vital!
