EAST TEXAS PFLAG MINUTES

President Gerry called the meeting to order at 7:15 p.m. The meeting was at the Tyler Unity Center with 12 attending – Lou Anne, Brenda, Anne, Gerry, Dwight, Troy, John, Rindi, Janet, Gene, Karen, and Risa. Gerry read the PFLAG Mission Statement.

Minutes and Treasurer’s Report:

Minutes of the previous meeting were approved. The treasurer’s report indicated a balance of $1,077.45 with no outstanding checks.

Business:

Pride Parade: Lou Anne reported that the Dallas Tavern Guild had received our application and cashed our Pride Parade entry check. She reviewed relevant parade rules. We have not yet been notified of parade position. John presented a design for our parade banner. John and Troy will investigate and present comparative prices for the banner at the August meeting.

Adopt-A-Highway: Lou Anne and Troy reported that the Texas Highway Department has designated a two-mile stretch of Highway 69 South between FM 346 and 344 for “Tyler Area Gays.” The highway department should have the sign in place in about a week. All were pleased with this high visibility stretch of highway. The first Adopt-A-Highway event will be Saturday, August 15th, with a rolling start set at 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Those who cannot make the 7:00 start are encouraged to come out and start with a second group at 8:00. The meeting place, parking, and other details will be presented at the August 10th PFLAG meeting.

Websites: Geocities will no longer be hosting free websites. Gene will investigate transferring our official ET PFLAG site to the National PFLAG web network. Troy reminded everyone that although PFLAG and TAG (Tyler Area Gays) are on MySpace.com and TAG is on Facebook.com these are not official websites. The TAG official website is tridd.com.

Activities/Events: Gene reported that the Gay Night at Outlaws was a big success with 40 new TAG members enlisted. Gene also announced that the book Prayers for Bobby, the basis for the HBO movie of the same name, is now available. The DVD is not yet available.

Future Meetings: Our next meeting will be August 10th. The September meeting will be on the 14th. Troy announced that Toby Johnson, author of Gay Perspective: Things Our Homosexuality Tells Us About the Nature of God and the Universe, will speak at our November or December meeting. TAG will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner as a TAG fundraiser in conjunction with the Toby Johnson program. Donations will be accepted for the dinner.
