HOW ARE YOU?

Postby Steve Cantrell on Mon Dec 17, 2007 4:54 pm

Excuse me for being honest.
Pardon me for being real.
I thought when you asked "how are you?"
That you really cared about how I feel.
To many people asking to many questions
And we all know that it is just for show.
People say "how are you?" while they turn the other way.
Makes me wonder do they really want to know?

I know. It must be a Southern thing. In San Francisco everyone was smiling and friendly and neighborly with out being false. I cant stand that fake East Texas good old gal and good old boy"how you darlin'" without looking at you schmaltz.. It doesn't seem very real to me. And I don't mean everyone, just enough to make it too many! call me a cynic. Sorry, I guess I am just tired tonight. :?

The correct answer is, "Fine and you?," .....it is a place holder, no one cares like they used to, we are all wrapped in our own misery, to self absorbed to truly care about anyone else and if for some reason you REALLY are doing great, then we are jealous and angry at you for being so flippin chipper....it is a no win...just say " Fine and you?"they will reply the typical, "good thanks for askin." and then we can all go back to our lonley , little miserable lives.

Hi Steve,

Nobody expects an answer, I think. Do you really want to know about today's bout with lumbago? about my damned headache? about my miserable children? about my dense spouse/partner? I don't think so & I think you'd be shocked if someone started to tell you instead of using the place filler. I also don't agree, then, it's because we're wrapped in our own misery (although I expect we are). I understand the "how are you" as a very positive & gracious acknowledgment of my existence & the "correct response" as a positive & gracious reciprocation of the acknowledgment. Oh, well.

Cheers, love, joy, peace, & slainte,

Tam/Tom
