I frankly was suprised this afternoon to read comments that were posted on Advocate.com regarding the 'raid' on the Rainbow Lounge in Ft Worth. I was amazed that so many of the people posting seemed to support the actions taken by the Police and TABC Agents. But I am also encouraged that many are appalled by their actions as well. A few points to concider:

1) This did not appear to be a 'routine inspection.' Officers entered the bar with restraints ready and a 'paddy wagon' waiting outside. The bar had only been open a week and certainly had not had time to gather complaints of lewd behavior or public drunkedness.

2) I can't believe a gay man (drunk or not) would grope a Police Officer. From what I read, the officers were plainly identified. These were not some members of the Village People on their way to the YMCA.

3) It just happened to be coincidence that this happened on almost the exact night of the 40th year Anniversary of Stonewall?

4) Some of the posted comments asked why anyone would live in Texas (or the South) with all the anti gay violence. Stonewall happened in (supposedly the most sophisticated) city in the nation -- NEW YORK !!! And there is still anti gay violence happening unfortunately all over this country.

5) To say "we deserve it' is ridiculous! There are just as many straight and bi men out there getting drunk and rude at bars.

6) Do the officers involved really think in this technological age that someone didn't take pictures of the whole event? From what I read, there are many eyewitness accounts, videos, and pictures to deny this ever happened.

It is certainly my hope this incident will not be swept away. I doubt with all the national press, it can not be ignored by the 'good old boy network'. I also wish Chad Gibson a speedy recovery.
